About Radiant Barrier

History:

An innovation originally developed by NASA for astronaut space suits has become a viable way to save on heating and cooling energy bills.  The popularity of heat reflecting foil is growing rapidly as homeowners become aware of the benefits.  Aluminum foil-based Radiant Barrier has found its way into the homes of people across the world, making their homes more comfortable and increasing their home's energy efficiency.

Did you know?

Electric rates across the country have gone up 20-40% in the last year.  This means it will cost a lot more to cool your home this summer.  Installing Radiant Barrier will help lower those bills.

Radiant Barrier insulation will:

  • Reduce heating and cooling cost
  • Increase comfort levels
  • Make your home or building more energy efficient
  • Keep heat in during the winter
  • Keep heat out during the summer

In retrofit applications, the attic is the most common location to install Radiant Barrier.  Virtually every house will benefit from an attic installed Radiant Barrier system, especially if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Hot attic space, which can reach 150°F or higher
  • Aged, compacted, little or no attic insulation
  • Dark colored or asphalt shingles
  • Hot second story rooms
  • Air ducts located in the attic space
  • Air handler located in the attic space
  • Little or no tree shading over your house

While being the most common retrofit option, the attic is not the only place where this heat reflecting foil will increase a home's overall efficiency.  In new construction, adding radiant barrier to walls and floors will pay back quickly in utility savings.  Other possible uses for radiant barrier include: crawl spaces, roofs, house wraps, vapor barriers, metal buildings and more.

Other common applications include:

  • House Wraps
  • Walls
  • Floors
  • Radiant Heating Systems
  • Crawl Spaces
  • Metal Buildings
  • and more
