About the Code:
In 2001, the Texas legislature passed SB5, which adopts the provisions of the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The code contains energy specifications for residences and commercial buildings.
The following types of construction must comply with the Residential energy code
- Detached living residence up to 3 stories, and less then 5000sf, that are to be air conditioned or heated
- Additions to existing buildings that are to be conditioned
- A remodeling job that increases the amount of conditioned space in a building
* For Additions and Remodels, only the new portion or addition is required to conform.
Savings:
The Texas Builders Association reported that 110,000 new homes were built in Texas in 2001. The homes built to the 2000 IECC requirements saved an average of 17% in energy consumption.
